Mariola Urrea Corres (Spain), Assistant Professor of European Community Law, Public International Law and Jean Monnet Chair, University of La Rioja, Spain: Research Project: "The European Treaty Revision: The Entry in force of the European Constitution."
Mariola Urrea Corres (1974, Pamplona, Spain) obtained her law degree in 1996 at the University of La Rioja where she specialized in European Union Law as a researcher with a doctoral fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Education. She was a visiting researcher at the Europa-Institut University of Saarlandes, Germany (in 1997 and in 2002 with a fellowship from Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes), at the Max Planck Institut, Heidelberg, Germany (1998, 1999, and in 2000 with a fellowship from the Regional Parliament of La Rioja), at the Von Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany (2002). She was a Jean Monnet Fellow at the Eurpoean University Institute in Florence (Italy) during the academic year 2004-2005.
She defended her Ph.D. in March 2002 (obtaining the highest qualification: a Sobreliente cum laude) at the University of La Rioja. Her thesis was later published under the following title: La cooperación reforzada en la Unión Europea (The reinforced cooperation of the European Union). Her ongoing research has resulted in the publication of five articles in both national and international journals of the European Law community. One article was awarded the ‘Premio García Goyena 2003’. She has approached two new areas of research, one of which includes the role of the regions in the European Union (four articles have already been published on this topic); the other is an analysis of the reforms of the Treaties of the European Community. Her proposed project as an Emile Noël Fellow at the Jean Monnet Center at NYU falls under the latter area of research.
Since 1997 she has been the Secretary of the Journal Boletín Europeo de la Universidad de La Rioja (BEUR) and a member of the Committee of the Revista General de Derecho Europea since 2000.
Finally, between 2000 and 2003, she was Secretary of the Department of Law in University of La Rioja. In June 2005 she was a Short Term Observer for the the European Union Election Observation Mission in Guinea Bissau.
