Dr. Marian Angeles Ahumada (Spain), Global Research Fellow.
Dr. Marian Ahumada Ruiz is an Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (LL.B., Universidad de Valladolid; Ph.D., Universidad Autónoma de Madrid; Diploma of Specialization in Constitutional Law and Political Science, Centro de Estudios Constitucionales, Madrid; Visiting researcher at Max Planck Institute, Germany, Harvard Law School and NYU School of Law). Dr. Ahumada’s research and teaching activities have been focused on the areas of constitutional law, the law of constitutional courts and comparative constitutionalism. She has lectured in various countries in Europe and Latin America and taken part in the Doctoral Program of the Beijing University of Foreign Studies-UAM. From 2001 to 2004, she was Academic Director of the EU-China Legal and Judicial Program (Lawyer Training) in Madrid. She is the author of La Jurisdicción Constitucional en Europa. Bases Teóricas y Políticas (Constitutional Jurisdiction in Europe: Political and Theoretical Foundations) (2005). Her present research explores the connections between federalism and judicial federalism.
European Union interests: On the one hand Dr. Ahumada is interested in all that has to do with the creation of a "common constitutional law" and the kind of actors and procedures involved in it. Dr. Ahumada's interest is not confined to the European case, but is more 'global' so to speak, but of course what is happening in Europe is an important part of the story. On the other hand, not being an expert in European law, she is genuinely curious and interested in studying the perception that the European national judiciaries have of European law and the way they deal with it. At this point her impression -in view of what happens in Spain (perhaps not the rule but surely not the exception)- is that elevated theory and earthly reality do not go together.
